The awesome Becca Klaver interviewed me for H_NGM_N. We discussed Angela Carter's fairy tales, what we wore in high school, demonic possession, teenage girls, Lady Gaga, and the wild reactions I got to my couture at AWP. Check it out, then check out her book L.A. Liminal. It's "wickedly liminal."
From the interview:
" [In high school] I carried around those giant roll-on tubes of glitter from Claire’s and would glitter my arms during Bible class. I was obsessed with nail polish, and had about 50 different kinds, mostly from Wet & Wild, or the rare, treasured bottle of Hard Candy. In speech class, I gave a speech about caring for your nail polish collection, when were supposed to share a how-to instruction. Other people talked about witnessing for Christ or taking care of their expensive cars their dads bought them."

Thanks, Gina! I love reading/hearing about people's high school selves too. I was so ridiculously excited when Becca asked me those questions! Haha.
I bet you had fabulous fashion in high school. Did you dress like you do now? I think I told you this when I met you but when I saw you at the Mommy Mommy reading I thought "that girl looks like a glamorous mermaid!"
I'm glad you love the bunny top. It's so ridiculous and fun. I'm thinking of wearing it for Halloween this year!!
XOXO
oh gosh- in high school i was all over the place. i started out as a total goth riot grrrl, then androgynous baby dyke, then bouffanted mod chick. i did it all! but i think the goth riot grrrl look was my favorite. and as a pisces, i am of course so flattered by the "glamorous mermaid" description!
yr bunny top will make an excellent halloween costume! i think i am going to be a teenaged pebbles (from the flinstones.)
xox
I loved hearing about the highschool fashions too. At mine we had to wear a uniform so there wasn't much leeway. I accesorized with large hoop earrings and nailpolish - purple, green, blue, black.
It wasn't until my first year at uni that I became obsessed with vintage fashion and as the years went on black eyeliner and bright eyeshadows became essentials too!
I love hearing what you ladies wore in high school! And Gina, I'm not sure if you noticed but Becca Klaver wrote about your various coined looks at her blog with highest compliments. I must say I am very jealous of your mod bouffant--I've always had short hair and wish I could have a big room of wigs a la Lady Gaga so that I could wear a different one every day! ;-)
And Andrea, I too had to wear uniforms in my earlier school days and found them so restricting. Which is too bad because now I think they are kind of cute! Haha. And you're right that you can do a lot with accessories and makeup. Limits are not always a bad thing!
